Thyroid Health
The Master Regulator
Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits at the base of the neck and is involved in an amazing number of physiologic processes in your body. The reality is that if your thyroid isn’t working well, nothing in your body will work well. This master gland controls many facets of your health, and every cell in your body contains a thyroid hormone receptor.
To truly understand what can go wrong with your thyroid, it is essential to understand its function. Think of your thyroid as your body’s energy generator, sending energy to every cell in your body through the hormones it makes. Your thyroid hormones keep your organs powered up and manage your metabolism. The most common thyroid disease is hypothyroidism, meaning the thyroid is under-active and your cells aren’t receiving enough fuel. Many people, especially women, have an under-active thyroid, and experience many symptoms, but they don’t know the root-cause.
An underproducing thyroid can lead to a myriad of symptoms that have to do with a low metabolic rate such as:
Brain fog
Fatigue
Weight gain or inability to lose weight
Cold hands or feet
Hair loss
Constipation
Poor concentration
Infertility
Low libido
Depression
Decreased heart rate
Decreased body temperature
The main causes of under-active thyroid are poor conversion of thyroid hormone T4 to T3, pituitary dysfunction caused by increased cortisol levels and Hashimotos- an autoimmune disorder. They key to improving your symptoms is getting an accurate diagnosis.
